Welcome to the FanFiction Garret and congratulations. You have taken the first step toward considering your writing seriously.
"But I do this for fun!"
Yes, and people make pottery for fun too. But nobody wants to put flowers in a cracked vase and nobody wants to read a story that hasn't been constructed properly. How many times have you clicked to the next fanfic in the archive because you saw the writer didn't even bother with spell checking or proper spacing?
Don't be shy. I'm the first to raise my hand and say "guilty".
The rules and conventions found in writing are there for one reason--to aid communication. If you can't communicate, you can't tell your story.
"But I'm a fan! I'm an Internet user! I'm a rebel! Rules are made to be broken!"
Okay, fine. Don't blame me when your story doesn't get read. Because this is what I'm here for, to show you the tricks that will keep the reader scrolling to the end of your story. Face it; you are competing with everything else for the reader's attention. Don't shoot your story in the foot by not making it the best it can possibly because it's too much work.
Important Lesson #1: Know your fandom. Fanfiction is a creation based off someone else’s work, typically copyrighted work. Most holders of copyrights don’t care about stories published on the Internet and some go rabid at the thought. Do a little research and find out where your fandom lies.
Don’t try to sell it. Legally, the copyright holders can approve or disapprove of a project and can demand a share of the profits. Lawyers are expensive.
Another important sub-lesson to this is: Know where you are going to post. If you want to write adult material, you should be aware that some hosting sites—like FanFiction.Net and LiveJournal—have gotten extremely paranoid about it. If you can’t bare to see your stories deleted, you’re probably safer hosting them yourself.
Important Lesson #2: Writing is work. I want to burst this bubble right away. No one except another writer will ever believe you, but writing is hard work.
Important Lesson #3: Editing and revising is more work. You finally get your masterpiece out and on paper. Now you have to go in and prune it with a machete. As much as it hurts, you have to make the paper bleed. Then when you piece it back together, the story is stronger than you ever imagined possible.
Important Lesson #4: The reader will never see the writing time involved in creating a story. The most rewarding (and maddening) responses you'll get as a writer is: "I loved it! What happens next?" Equally maddening is "You're not done yet!" as you spend an entire year working on the epic sequel to your story.
Important Lesson #5: NEVER submit or post a first draft ANYWHERE! Including the 'Net. You want to make a BookWorm froth at the mouth like she has rabies? Break this rule. It is the cardinal sin of professional writers. So many of the stories I skip over are skipped because they are first drafts. A sub-lesson to this one is: The entire reading public is not your beta reader.
Important Lesson #6: You WILL write more than one draft. A writing project is never finished, even when you write down "The End". The most challenging portion is completed, the finding the words to express your vision. Now you have to make those words better.
Important Lesson #7: Pre-writing makes finding the words slightly easier and helps the final product have a sense of closure. And makes sequel writing a little easier. What is pre-writing? That is one of the subjects that will be covered in the Writing Tutorials section.
