#10: Nouns

We're covering the basics for the next few Grammar Guides. We've already defined verb tenses, verbals, and clichés. Now it's time for us to look at people, places, things, and the words that replace them in a sentence. Bear with me, I know you've heard all these definitions once already in school. Hopefully, now you're paying attention to the subject at hand and not the cute boy or girl sitting in the desk next to you.

NOUNS

Nouns are the names of people, places, things, and ideas (everything that can be named). A proper noun is a word that names a specific person, place, or thing and is almost always capitalized. Common nouns are everything else that is named. If you use a proper noun to name the person being addressed, it is called a noun of address.

Example: Jim, wash the dog!

Nouns can also form clauses and phrases. A noun clause is a group of words that have a subject and a verb and can do anything a noun alone can do in a sentence.

Example: But he still watched Lissa prepare the meat.

A noun phrase is the noun and all the words that modify it working together.

Example: He nodded down at the cut under his torn sleeve of his jerkin.

Categories of Nouns

Honestly, the different categories only come up in classes. ESL writers, knowing this might help you pick the right words.

Count nouns are objects you can count (one book, five eggs). Mass nouns are objects that can't be counted (air, water, blood). Collective nouns take a singular form but describe a group (a jury, a herd, a flock). Abstract nouns are the intangible ideas that can take articles (peace, justice, grief).

Cases of Nouns

There are only three cases a noun can have depending on how it is used in a sentence. Subjective case is when the nouns is the subject of the sentence.

Example: Fred built the cabinets.

Objective case is when the noun is the object of the sentence or phrase.

Example: Mike hit Fred.

Possessive case is when the noun shows possession of another object. It is also the only time the noun changes, either with the addition of just an apostrophe (boys') or an apostrophe and s (Fred's).

Example: Fred's bike is cherry red.
