You've read a story and you'd like to leave a comment; something more useful than "that was good" but less than offering a suggestion for any flaws like an in-depth critique. Orson Scott Card in his book How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy gives five questions that concentrate on story mechanics instead of literature theory.

  • Were you ever bored, or found your mind wandering? Where did this happen?
  • Were there any characters whose names you just couldn't remember?
  • Was there anything you didn't understand? Was there any part you had to read twice? Was there any part where you were confused?
  • Was there any point where you said "oh, come on!" i.e., was any part not believable?
  • (If the work is unfinished) What do you think will happen next? What are you still wondering about?

I know I'm extremely guilty of not using these questions when I should. They help you keep the review positive. I know there are some stories out there that it is very hard to stay positive about. Good luck reviewing.
