After I added the ability to buy cited books to each writing tutorial and started the newsletter, I realized I needed one page to send viewers and subscribers who want to buy the book without searching through the tutorials.

Why I Recommend: I'm constantly going back to this book with my writing, fanfiction and original. Her examples are easily understandable, even if you've never read the book she's talking about. Her tone is pleasant, not dictating what your work has to do. It's been my guide for the tone of the tutorials--even though I have slipped every now and then.

Why I Recommend: I took a lot of notes from this book, even though only one quote has been used in the tutorials. Lots of exercises to do with your writing.

Why I Recommend: I was given a copy of this book when my high school English 4 teacher was cleaning out a closet, and I have yet to find a simpler grammar book. If you worry about understanding the rules, get this book!

Why I Recommend: I provided a link to the latest edition in case the previous is unavailable. If you worry about understanding the rules, get this book!

Why I Recommend: The character questionnaire is straight from this book. The author has also compiled some helpful advice from other writers on character creation. The most useful feature of this book is all this lists. You have everything from phobias to clothing to occupations, complete with descriptions.

Why I Recommend: How-to essays from the best in the Private Eye sub-genre of mystery writing. It also has useful advice for those not writing mysteries.

Why I Recommend: How-to essays from the best in mystery writing. It also has useful advice for those not writing mysteries. I'm constantly referring to this book as well.

Why I Recommend: There's now a second edition. I don't know what has changed, but I'm supplying in case you can't buy the first.

Why I Recommend: I cited the movie, so here's your opportunity to buy it.

Why I Recommend: I checked this book out of the library and copied the chapters I found useful. Unfortunately, I didn't get a list of all the authors that contributed to it.

Why I Recommend: You want to watch an example of escalating tension and suspense, get this movie. My favorite line: "I've already seen the airport."

Why I Recommend: Another book I am constantly referring too. Geared for short stories, but some items can be taken for novel writing as well.

Why I Recommend: Volume II is another book I refer to. More recent compilation from articles in the Writers' Digest magazine.

Why I Recommend: Mostly an inspirational book. The author maintained a correspondence with C.S. Lewis.

Why I Recommend: Really helpful at identifying cliches and other tired phrases.

Why I Recommend: This has become one of my favorite writing books, inspirational and useful. Slight warning, Stephen King does use language and talks about things he has done that some might find offensive.

Why I Recommend: Everyone's standard on concise writing.

Why I Recommend: Simple to understand and without the exercises in Warriner's. If grammar has you completely terrified, get this book.

Why I Recommend: Lists every grammar rule available.

Why I Recommend: This was my university Advanced Grammar textbook. Lots of exercises.

Why I Recommend: The book that taught me how to proofread.

Why I Recommend: Not only is Sol Stein an author, he is also an editor and a writing teacher. This book is full of great advice and I can't wait to add more from him to my library.

Why I Recommend: From the couple that began the famous magazine Story, and gave many of the modern best authors their starts. A classic (first published in 1975), but still has practical advice for new writers of today.

Why I Recommend: A brand new book that I have really enjoyed. He looks at the various types of scenes and how to structure them best.

Why I Recommend: Another brand new book. Plot is no longer a four-letter word once you've finished reading this one.

Why I Recommend: A topic by topic breakdown of the editing process. I expect to be using this book as a major source is coming Editing Lessons.

Why I Recommend: I read it a long time ago, but some of the advice has stuck with me. Will be adding to my personal library a.s.a.p.

Why I Recommend: He wrote this book before How to Grow a Novel, but I got it second. The triage technique is going to help us edit fiction.

Why I Recommend: This is one of the newest books in my collection, but I have found Todd A. Stone has good ideas, even though he throws a lot of push-ups at you. But writers need more exercise, right?

Why I recommend: Robert Fulghum's philosophical bent always makes me laugh. He does reach the Truth and at the same time makes you empathize with the rest of humanity.

Why I recommend: I love the Lord Peter Wimsey series, and Walsh does an admirable job picking up the pieces Sayers left and putting them together. The mystery is rather ho-hum, but all the characters shine.
