#1: Fitting Writing In
Odds are you have a pretty full life already. Friends and family who insist on making sure you’re breathing; work, school, or maybe both; and the other stuff I like to lump under “chores” that generally insure that your home and personal environment isn’t toxic. And now you want to add writing to the list.
Be prepared for those without the compulsive writing gene or drive or mindset to look at you like you’re crazy and maybe ask that question out loud. I haven’t found a good answer for “Why would you want to? Are you crazy?” yet, even when I ask myself.
What I can tell people is I’m happier and centered when I’m making progress on a story. For me, it’s like if all that creative energy doesn’t get spent on paper, it comes out in my life in outbursts that usually make people think I’m a whole burger short of a Happy Meal. Buying paper and ink for the rest of my life is cheaper than therapy.
But we’re fans. We’re all used to people not understanding and looking at us weird. However, your story won’t get written unless you take care of yourself. My definition of “taking care of yourself” means not letting any portion of life get out of whack from the rest.
Easier said than done.
It’s all a work in progress and what works for me may not work for you. Don’t be afraid of changing things up, because some times your brain just needs to be knocked out of a rut. I’ll try to keep the recommendations broad enough for everyone to adapt.
Break the project into chunks. Getting Things Done’s method of breaking down what needs to be done into projects and the necessary Next Action Steps works well with writing. You want a story published on the Internet for other people to read. That’s the Project. Now you ask yourself what has to be done first to obtain the finished Project. You may find the Project is made up of smaller projects, but you keep breaking down until you get to a clearly defined Next Action Step.
A story Project is made up of at least six other projects: Brainstorming, First Draft, Second Draft, Beta Reading, Third Draft, and Publishing. I don’t recommend avoiding the Beta Reading and Third Draft projects if you are just starting out. As we cover each of these stages, you will see the Next Action Steps. For now, just realize you only need to concentrate on the story stage you are currently on.
Set a sane deadline. Once you know how long the story should be, you can set yourself a deadline for when to have various stages done. What I have discovered is it takes me three days to do a Master Story Summary. I base my first draft deadline on how long it would take me to write 70,000 words if I wrote my hourly word count everyday. Roughly sixty-two days is what I calculated, but the point is not trying to finish 70,000 words in two weeks.
A sane deadline also takes into account everything else you must do. My personal example of how poor deadline considerations can mess you up is the 2008 National Novel Writing Month, which is always held during November. I had a graduate exam scheduled on December 1st. Now I’m not blaming my lackluster performance totally on participating in NaNo, but it didn’t help me study or rest the night before trying to finish my 50,000 words and win it. Avoid that stress and schedule around major events. Free your holidays too. You may end up running back to your manuscript as stress relief, but that’s better than skipping family-and-friends time because the manuscript is driving you crazy.
But don’t try to schedule your whole year in advance. That is a lightening rod to Murphy to come get you. I never schedule out the next stage until I have completed the current one. That policy also gives the brain a rest before switching modes.
Carve out undisturbed time to compose in. When I’m obsessed with a story, I can write anywhere. Typing anywhere is still an issue though—even with the invention of laptops. I like to schedule in thirty minutes to an hour of writing time at my computer, and that is my official writing time. Anything I get done outside of that time frame is lagniappe.
Why bother with the distinction? Because I will write all day if I don’t have a stop time and nothing else gets done. And I have established beyond a doubt that my cat will not wash dishes or vacuum.
Carry a notebook. I don’t trust memory. I learned that lessons back in the seventh grade, when I had just started writing stories. Someone stole the folder that held everything for the current one I was writing. I recreated the story from memory and was never happy with the results. This event also helped me get really anal about backups too.

Give yourself daily word count goals. But only if it’s a goal you can reach and as long as you don’t go crazy trying to catch up if you fall behind. Daily word counts are a good way to hold yourself accountable for building a daily writing practice. Plus, they’re a good way to report that you are going to make sure you will meet your deadline.
Reporting progress. This doesn’t mean upload a chapter as soon as you finish writing it. Publish only after you’ve finished the entire manuscript and have edited. What you can do is use metrics or word count graphics to show your progress. I’ll go over the different options for this in a later post.
